Nestled in the heart of Jasper, Indiana, the Astra Theatre has stood as a cornerstone of the community for over 80 years. This historic venue, with its art deco façade and vibrant marquee, is not just a building—it’s a place where memories are made, stories are told, and history comes alive. After decades of wear and tear, and sitting dormant for approximately 15 years…the Astra continues to bring community together.
Thanks to the passionate efforts of the local community and the nonprofit group Next Act, Inc., the theater underwent a massive restoration. Reopening in 2018, the revitalized Astra preserved its historic charm while incorporating modern amenities, ensuring it could continue to host incredible events for future generations. From hosting live performances to screening classic films, the Astra has been at the center of countless unforgettable events. UPCOMING EVENTS
- Heart of Jasper is hosting a FREE watch party for the upcoming IU vs PURDUE Men’s basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 31. Game time is 8pm. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
- Saturday, February 15, American Fools Band will be performing as a fundraiser for Anderson Woods. A tribute to the Music of John Cougar Mellencamp will performed from 7:30-10:30pm. Anderson Woods provides a safe and dignified camping opportunity to children and adults with Special Needs. Click here to learn more about this organization. Purchase tickets for $30.
- On February 22, Disney short films will be shown on the big screen as part of the Pamper My Princess event, also hosted by Heart of Jasper throughout the downtown. From 10am-2pm, bring your princess in to warm up between fun activities that will be taking place throughout the downtown.
- Where are all the Tay Tay fans?! March 1, DJ Swiftie will transforming the historic Astra theater into a celebration of music and nostalgia from 7-10pm. Grab your friends and purchase tickets today!
- March 2, another fun opportunity for those die-hard Hoosier & Boiler fans will take place. Come cheer on your favorite women’s basketball team with a free viewing of the game. The game time is 2pm. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

History of the Astra Theatre
The historic theater first opened in 1936 and operated as a family-owned movie theater for 66 years. On Sept. 12, 2002 the theater closed and sat vacant for 15+ years. A local group of passionate community members created a non-profit, Next Act Inc. in 2015 and raised funds to purchase the building. The group received a historic preservation grant and went through a complete renovation and opened its doors in 2018 after completing the $1.7 million project.
