The historic Opel/Rohleder home was built in 1850 by John Opel. A report in the Jasper Weekly Courier of November 17, 1858 stated, “Among the new buildings, that of Mr. John Opel on the Troy Road is one of the best built. It is a fine, large two story brick, embracing a store room and residence. It is built in a most substantial manner with a massive stone foundation and has a very superior cellar.”
The Opel house became an Inn in 1859, and center for social events, particularly for 4th of July celebrations. Also known as the Greentree Inn, the Opel Inn was a Federal style home with stenciled designs on the walls of the ballroom and bedroom.
In 1977 Joe & Judy Rohleder purchased the home from Richard and Helen Hochgesang and restored the home as close as possible to its original state. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and Structures and the National Register of Historic Places.
