Prior to 1851, the congregation of St. James Lutheran Church was organized in the state of Ohio. The members later decided to more to Southern Indiana in hopes of changing their way of life. Beginning in 1852, the original log cabin church housed the pastor’s family and the school. The current church was built for approximately $5,000. It was dedicated on April 2, 1876. Services were held in the traditional German language of the church founders until 1942.
