Fr. Kundek, the priest in Ferdinand during the town's birth, placed an ad in Der Wahreheitsfreund, a German language Catholic Weekly, inviting German Catholics living in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky to come settle in the new town.
In the fall of 1840, residents built the town's first log church. By 1844 due to increasing number of parishioners, Fr. Kundek prepared to build a larger charge made of stone.
The cornerstone was laid July 25, 1845. It is currently the St. Ferdinand Catholic Church made of the beautiful stone and features masterful stained glass windows.
