St. Anthony Parish was founded on May 23, 1864, by the Rev. Joseph Meister, O.S.B. Originally, this scenic town and its parish were called St. Joseph’s. In September of 1865, the names of both were changed to St. Anthony. The present sandstone church was started in 1881. While the church was being built, parishioners form St. Anthony walked six miles to the nearest mass in Celestine. On December 20, 1885, a dedication of their new church was led by Rev. Cyrin Thomas, O.S.B.
St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church belongs in a cluster parish with Sacred Heart of Jesus, located in Schnellville, IN.
