Named after the Emperor of Austria, the enchanting village of Ferdinand was founded by the Reverend Joseph Kundek in 1840. Fr. Kundek’s vision was to create thriving settlements for German Catholics. Ferdinand’s architecture is based in its German heritage. However, the town maintains many diverse architectural stylings… blending old with new. Listed here, is a self-guided tour of some of Ferdinand’s oldest and most interesting structures. Most of them are located within the original town plat as laid out by Fr. Kundek.
It is easily driven, however if a walking tour is preferred, please check the map image above for a one mile walking excursion. Start at St. Ferdinand Church and along the way, visit shops and restaurants. At the end of your walk, stop at Monastery Immaculate Conception home of the Sisters of St. Benedict and tour this awe-inspiring domed church.
